Royal National Park is a protected national park in the Sutherland Shire. It is 29km south of the Sydney central business district.

History

It was the second national park in the world. It was the first to have “national park” in its name. Originally called “National Park”, it was renamed after Queen Elizabeth II’s 1954 tour. She passed by the park on a train.

Sir John Robertson, the Premier of New South Wales, founded it. He proclaimed it in 1879. It was heritage-listed in 2006.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The park is filled with natural wonders. There is a large, flat area called Audley. It’s used for picnics. The park has a heritage-listed timber boat house. Eagle Rock is a rock shaped like an eagle’s head.

The area has five beaches. Werrong Beach is the only naturist beach within the park.
