The historic town of York in WA is the state’s oldest inland town. It is almost 100 kilometres east of Perth and has a population of 2,300 people.
History
The area of York was settled in 1831, just two years later than Perth. Growing numbers in the Swan River settlement meant more land had to be established to grow much-needed crops. A party of explorers forged what is now known as Avon Valley and established the town of York.
It saw its first buildings built in 1836 and developed into a productive farming area.
In 1837, many more people arrived in the area attracted by reports of gold.

Today, York has lots of heritage buildings dating back to the mid-1800s. The whole town is recognised as a historic town on the National Estate of the Commonwealth of Australia register.
York is primarily a tourist town and has all of the facilities, amenities and activities demanded by the modern visitor.
