The suburb of Yokine in Perth is situated within the City of Stirling local government area. The suburb takes its name from the native Aboriginal word for “native dog”. This was possibly chosen due to the area being close to Dog Swamp. The suburb has a population of over 10,600 people.

History

In 1840, a grant that was originally allocated to TCR Walters and Yokine was a part of that land. Until after the Second World War there was only one house in Yokine. Most of the area had been owned up to that point by Western Australian Golf Limited. After the war, the area was caught up in the housing boom and by the 1970s the whole of Yokine was virtually fully developed.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area has 2 major shopping centres, the Flinders and the Dog Swamp complexes. Sports are well supported in Yokine and in 2014 the Swamp Dogs entered the Street Roller Hockey League. Transport is provided by Transdev Perth and Swan Transit buses along with easy access to all the major roads by car.
