Toodyay is a town on the Avon River in Western Australia, best known as the home of bushranger Moondyne Joe. It has a population of more than 4,600.

History

Known as Newcastle until 1910, Toodyay was one of the earliest inland towns in Western Australia. The name Toodyay is believed to mean ‘place of plenty’ in the language of the local Noongar tribe. The town was originally built two kilometres away but was abandoned in favour of higher ground due to regular flooding.

Bushranger Moondyne Joe was imprisoned in the town for stealing a horse. Though he escaped, he returned to the town a couple of years later to steal supplies to get him to South Australia.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Each year the town hosts the Moondyne Festival to celebrate the life and times of Moondyne Joe. It’s also popular for its olive oil and emu farms, and archery park.
