South Perth is a residential suburb in Western Australia, 3km south of Perth’s CBD. It has a population of around 12,000.

History

The area was thought to be inhabited by the Noongar tribes, who had little contact with other people.

After the permanent settlement of the British and the establishment of the Swan River Colony, most of the area’s development took place north of the river in the Town of Perth and Fremantle. The area was unofficially known as South Perth but was was mostly untouched. By 1858, the area was officially known as South Perth on maps and roads in the area had been built.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

South Perth is home to Perth Zoo, a 41-acre zoo that opened in 1898. It houses a lot of Australian Wildlife as well as exotic and rare species.

It’s also home to Sir James Mitchell Park, a stretch of parklands dotted with gazebos and picnic areas.
