Sorrento is a coastal suburb 19km north of Perth, Western Australia. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 7,371.

History

Prior to European settlers arriving, the Whadjuk people lived in the area. The first European to arrive in the area was a whaler called Patrick Marmion in 1849. The area was subdivided and named Sorrento in 1929. The name comes from an Italian town.

In 1987, the Hillarys Boat Harbour was built to prepare for the America’s Cup. The marina was the first of its kind in the northern suburbs of Perth.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Sorrento Quay offers an array of shops and restaurants to the resident right on the coast. Off the coast lies a protected area for marine species called Marmion Marine Park.

Sorrento has numerous schools and good access to other schools in bordering suburbs. It is home to many families who enjoy the beachside views.
