Safety Bay is a coastal suburb of Perth. It’s based 52km south-west of the city’s central business district. It falls under the City of Rockingham local government area, and has a population of more than 7,400.

History

Safety Bay’s name originates in the 1830s, when John Septimus Roe described it as a “safe, well protected boat anchorage”. Early attempts at transforming the natural bay into a harbour met with mixed success, and the area wouldn’t truly develop until the 1920s. Safety Bay’s sheltered beach made it a popular holiday destination at the start of the 20th century, and it remains so to this day.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The beaches around Safety Bay are used extensively for fishing, boating and windsurfing. The nearby Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is a haven for birdwatching, and the wildlife-heavy Penguin Island is just off the coast. Various shops and restaurants are placed in the suburb, and it’s close to Rockingham for further retail options.
