Leinster is a town in Western Australia in the northern goldfields area. It is 968km northeast of Perth and 4km east of the Shire of Leonora local government area. It has a population of over 730.
History
Leinster was set up as a dormitory town in 1976 by Agnew Mining. The town was inhabited by workers at its nearby Perseverance and Rockys Reward nickel mines and Agnew gold mines. It gets its name after the close by Leinster Downs station.
The Leinster Nickel Operation now belongs to the BHP Billiton Nickel West business group. This employs close to 1000 workers and produces over 40,000 tons of nickel concentrate every year. From 2002 to 2007, gold was mined 41km southeast of Leinster at the Thunderbox Gold Mine.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Leinster is home to a post office, a supermarket, a service station, a tavern, and a primary school. There is also an 18-hole golf course and an indoor sports centre.
