With a population of over 1,200, Halls Creek is a town in Western Australia. Based in the East Kimberley Region, it is one of the only big towns on the Great Northern Highway.

History

Many Indigenous tribes lived in Halls Creek for thousands of years. These tribes included the Jaru, Kija, Kukatja, Walmajarri and Booniyandi people.

European settlers arrived in Halls Creek in the late 19th century. In 1885, a gold prospector called Charlie Hall found a large gold nugget in the area. Over 15,000 flooded the area, hoping to find gold. However, the land was too harsh and the gold rush only lasted for three months.

Tourists can see many natural attractions in Halls Creek. These attractions include China Wall, Old Halls Creek, and Wolfe Creek Crater. Purnululu National Park lies 120km to the north and is also popular with tourists.
