Greenough is small town rich in history. It’s located 22km South of Geraldton, and has a population of over 800.

History

Before Greenough was built, the area was home to the Yamatji people. The first European to explore it was George Grey in 1839. Grey named the area after Sir George Bellas Greenough. The land was surveyed by Augustus Gregory in 1851, and the town began to grow. It was a thriving wheat community until 1872, when a major cyclone hit. Flooding followed in 1888, and discovery of gold elsewhere caused a further exodus. Many buildings were abandoned, only to be snapped up and preserved by the National Trust after World War 2.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Greenough is a fascinating slice of history that draws many tourists. The Central Greenough Historic Settlement is a series of 11 restored buildings with an information centre and café. The Greenough Pioneer Museum offers a further window into the past. Ellendale Pool is a lovely picnic spot, and Greenough River Nature Trail can be walked or cycled.
