Based in Western Australia’s Great Southern region, Gnowangerup is a small town. It lies 61km south-east of Katanning. According to the 2006 census, the town has a population of 624 people.
History
The name “Gnowangerup” means “place of the mallee fowl” in the Noongar language. When the town was established in 1908, its name was Ngowangerupp. However, locals were not happy with this spelling. As such, the town changed its name to Gnowangerup in 1913.
In 1910, Arnold Piesse opened the local Agricultural Hall. In 1912, the train from Tambellup began to service Gnowangerup.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Gnowangerup is a rural working town. As such, there is little for visitors to do. Travellers can visit the Aylmore Mineral Springs. In native folklore, two warriors fought to the death here. When they died, two springs appeared and began to spout red water.
