Donnybrook is a town in Western Australia. It’s located on the South Western Highway, roughly 210km south of Perth. Donnybrook has a population of more than 2,500.
History
The Donnybrook area was first settled by Irish immigrants in the 1840s. The town wasn’t gazetted until 1894, but a subsequent gold rush soon saw it flourish. In 1900, the town’s first apple tree was planted. This set Donnybrook on the path to fame as the centre of Western Australia’s apple growing industry.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Naturally, apples feature heavily in Donnybrook’s attractions. A 7.5-metre fibreglass apple sits in the town, and is one of Australia’s ‘Big Things’. The Apple Fun Park is the country’s biggest free-entry playground, and old the apple-shaped lights at the entrance to the train station still remain.
The annual Apple Festival draws in thousands of visitors, and backpackers often make money by picking apples in the town orchards. Apples aside, Donnybrook is a beautiful town with many old buildings. It’s also known for its large number of English oak trees.
