History

The story of Cooloongup’s name is not a simple one. It was officially named after Lake Cooloongup in 1974. The word itself is expected to be Aboriginal. It is believed to mean either ‘place of children’ or ‘the moon.’ The Nyungar tribe were the original occupants of Cooloongup, but there is no consensus on the word’s origins.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Lake Cooloongup is found towards the east of the town. It is managed as part of Rockingham Lakes Regional Park. There is not much surface water for part of the year, and the water is so saline, it is known as one of the ‘White Lakes.’ There are sporting facilities in the town for athletics, golf, and baseball.
