History

In a case of decidedly humble origins, Claremont began as nothing but a single inn offering shelter to travellers. A group of convicts arrived in 1850 to build Fremantle Road, and both a church and schoolhouse had popped up by the 1860s. The Claremont Estate, built by James Morrison to honour his wife Clara, is where the name derives from. Many families began buying land in the area in the 1870s, and the community further prospered with the construction of a train station that connected Claremont to the Perth-Fremantle line.

Claremont is stuffed with attractions to keep everyone entertained. The town centre is full of boutique shops and cafes, with all eight precincts offering something new. All sorts of events occur at the Claremont Showgrounds throughout the year, and The Freshwater Bay Museum preserves the storied history of the region.
