Lying on the banks of the Gascoyne River, Carnarvon is a coastal town in Western Australia. Located nearly 900km north of Perth, it has a population of 4,559.
History
Carnarvon takes its name from Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon and former Secretary of State for the Colonies. Prior to European settlement, the region was home to the Inggarda people. The town was founded in 1883 and for most of its early life, served as a port and supply depot.
The first of three tramways was built in 1884. The second was completed in the mid-1880s and the final tramway in 1900. By 1934, the Carnarvon region had over 1.4 million sheep and the area was the centre of a successful wool industry.
