History

Applecross peninsula in the north of Scotland gave the suburb its name. Many of Applecross’s streets take their names from Scottish towns. Alexander Matheson named the suburb in 1896. It had previously been granted to Lionel Lukin in 1830.

A “Patriotic Grand Prix” took place in the suburb in 1940. This was a car race held on the streets of Applecross.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Applecross’ jacaranda trees give the suburb a distinctive feel. The trees flower in late spring. Therefore, there is an annual Jacaranda Festival each November.

The area is home to Heathcote Hospital. The hospital provided mental health services from 1929 until 1994. Today, it houses a memorial to Heath Ledger. Local landmarks include the Raffles Hotel and Canning Bridge.
