Yea is a town in central Victoria, 100km northeast of Melbourne. In the local government area of the Shire of Murrindindi, it has a population of over 1,000.

History

One of the first areas visited by the Hume and Hovell expedition in 1824, Yea was originally home to the Taungurung people. Within 15 years, the land had mostly been taken up by graziers. Established in 1855, Yea was a service centre to grazing, gold mining, and timber-getting in the area.

It was named Yea after Colonel Lacy Walter Yea. He was a British Army colonel who was killed in the Crimean War that year and used to be the State Surveyor-General’s commanding officer. The Post Office opened in 1858.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Yea is home to many buildings on the Victorian Heritage Register including the former Yea railway station and the former Purcell’s General Store. The town is also home to the Yea Golf Club.
