Yarrawonga is on the border of Victoria and New South Wales. It lies on the Murray River, more than 260 kilometres from the state capital of Melbourne. The population is just over 7,000.

History

One of the area’s major industries is explosives. An explosives factory, launched in the 1940s, is an official Australian Department of Defence asset. Today it is run by a French company.

Nearby Lake Mulwala lies just downstream from the town and is one of the area’s main recreational facilities. It was created by the damming of the Murray River and is now a popular spot for boating kayaking and fishing opportunities.

Residents and visitors to Yarrawonga can choose from the many sporting pursuits offered on Lake Mulwala. The town also has its own Aussie Rules football club which plays in the Ovens and Murray League.
