History

Yarram means plenty of water. It is an indigenous Australian work. The town used to be called Yarram Yarram, but this was later shortened.

In the 1880s, development increased and a lot of the new roads took their names from early landowners. Agriculture was important in the area, with dairy farming becoming prevalent.

Yarram has a strong sense of community, and is popular with tourists. You can see heritage buildings on the main road going through the town. Yarram is also close to Ninety Mile Beach and the Tarra-Bulga National Park. In the national park, you can see the remains of the eucalypt forests that used to be found throughout the area.
