The small town of Yallourn North is noteworthy for its many churches from different denominations. It is around 150 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, and has a population of 1,500 people.

History

The town grew from the discovery of brown coal in the area. Many people tried to capitalise on the coal find but were unsuccessful. It wasn’t until the Victorian Mines Department took over in the 1910s that Victoria’s electricity supply was better protected. In the 1950s a landslide in the coal mine greatly impacted future development of the town.

A school was established in the town in 1917.

During the Second World War great steps were taken to protect the mine from aircraft attack.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The small town has the area’s only Serbian Orthodox Church and Mosque. There are many sporting opportunities including golf, shooting, cricket and bowls.
