History

In 1824, Europeans began to settle in the area. In late 1852, the discovery of gold brought groups of alluvial miners to the town. This rush introduced amenities like schools, shops and churches to serve the miners.

Yackandandah’s serene forests and mountains are well-recognised. The town’s main industries are dairy farming and forestry. Its tourism sector is also strong. Plenty of bed and breakfast lodges are available to host visitors. Yackandandah’s gold mining history is marketed as the town’s highlight.

Yackandandah was where the 2003 Australian film Strange Bedfellows was filmed. The district hosts an annual folk music festival. Artists and music-lovers come from the local area, interstate and abroad.
