Woodend sits about halfway between Bendigo and Melbourne. The town has a population of 5,413. It is part of the Shire of Macedon Ranges. The Calder Freeway bypasses it to the north and east.

History

Thomas Mitchell first surveyed Woodend in 1836. He then opened the town for settlement. The population boomed when gold was discovered in the area. Many gold-diggers moved their families into Woodend.

During the gold rush, the town was the main thoroughfare through the nearby Black Forest.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Woodend has a thriving horse racing community. Visitors come to town because of nearby attractions. These attractions include Hanging Rock, Mt Macedon, and several waterfalls. Unlike most of Australia, Woodend often sees snowfall.

The town hosts the Woodend Winter Arts Festival each June. It is held on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend and attracts artists from all across Australia. The Melbourne Bicycle Touring Club hosts the Melbourne Autumn Day ride in Woodend each year.
