Wilsons Promontory is a national park, commonly known as The Prom. It’s in the Gippsland region of Victoria, located 157km south-east of Melbourne. It is the southernmost national park in mainland Australia.

History

The first Europeans to visit the area were George Bass and Matthew Flinders in 1798. The Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and the Royal Society of Victoria lobbied the Victorian Government to preserve the area as a national park. They temporarily did in 1898 and made the decision permanent in 1908.

A large section of the park was burnt in 2005 bushfires caused by a controlled burn. During the Black Saturday Fires in 2009, 50% of the park suffered damage.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Tidal River is the main spot for camping. The area is home to a wide range of wildlife species. There are several walking and hiking tracks available.
