Willaura is a small rural town located 231km west of Melbourne surrounded by rich farmland. It has a population of around 600 people and is a part of the local government area of the Rural City of Ararat.

History

The place now known as Willaura was earmarked for settlement in 1836 when Major Thomas Mitchell travelled through the area and went on to write in his journal that “a land more favourable for colonisation could not be found.”

Blocks of land became available for selection in 1862 and these were snapped up. The discovery of gold at nearby by Mafeking in 1900 brought led to a further influx of people.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Though small, Willaura still has a number of local businesses and shops as well as a hotel, bakery and supermarket. There are also some great community facilities for residents and visitors including a swimming pool, a medical centre and a recreational reserve.
