Whittlesea is a town in Victoria with a population of more than 4,800. It’s based in the wider City of Whittlesea local government area, roughly 40km north-east of Melbourne.

History

In 1853, a community called Plenty began to develop around a newly opened post office. This settlement was renamed Whittlesea in 1864, and gained its own school in in 1878. This school still operates today as the Whittlesea Primary School. In 2009, Whittlesea found itself on the frontlines in the efforts against the Black Saturday bushfires. The town acted as a staging area for relief efforts, and its volunteer firefighters played a heroic role combating nearby blazes.

Whittlesea and the surrounding Plenty Valley are popular holiday destinations. There are plenty of scenic walking and cycling routes, as well as numerous attractions. The Toorourrong Reservoir and Yan Yean Reservoirs are lovely picnic spots, and there’s a huge range of excellent restaurants dotted about the region.
