West Melbourne is an industrial suburb in Melbourne, Victoria. It’s located 3km north-west of Melbourne’s central business district and has a population of 3,744.

History

The West Melbourne Post Office opened on 1 March 1937 and was replaced by the Queen VIC Market Newsagency office in 1990. It closed in 1996.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

West Melbourne is bounded by Victoria Street and the Sunbury railway lines in the north. It’s bordered by Moonee Ponds Creek and the Yarra River in the south. The Flagstaff Gardens form the eastern boundary. To the west, the area is bound by Coode Island, which is home to Victoria’s largest toxic chemical storage facility.

The area is largely industrial and includes the Melbourne Markets. The markets have wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, fish markets and the National Flower Centre. There is a small pocket of residential and commercial properties.
