West Footscray is only 7km away from Melbourne’s central business district. The suburb has a bustling population of 10,222. Its people are mainly of Australian, English, Vietnamese, Irish and Scottish descent.

History

The first post office opened in the suburb in 1914. For most of its history, West Footscray was part of the City of Footscray. Since the abolition of the City of Footscray in 1994, it has been part of the City of Maribyrnong.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Barkly Village houses the majority of West Footscray’s shops. The area has a richly vibrant, multicultural feel. The Melbourne Chinese Bible Church and West Footscray Community Centre are also in Barkly Village.

West Footscray is also home to Western General Hospital and the Whitten Oval. The Oval is the training ground of the AFL’s Western Bulldogs. The team played their home games there until the late 1990s.
