Watsonia is a Melbourne suburb. It is in the north-east, about 16km from the central business district. It is part of the local government area of the City of Banyule. It has a population of 5,146.

History

Watsonia takes its name from a man called Frank Watson. He owned land and was a property developer.

The railway station was established in 1924 to try and get people to come to the area to buy property. In the 1940s, property prices became cheap enough for people to afford, and the area was urbanised.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Australian army has the Simpson Barracks in Watsonia. The site is well equipped with schools, workshops, training areas and more. Watsonia itself has several educational establishments. It also has an Australian Rules football team called Watsonia Football Club.
