By the 1840s, the first settlers had started arriving in the area called Lady Bay. This was a natural harbour and made it ideal for the siting of a township. In 1846, a town was established and the Post Office opened in 1849 on January 1st. The area quickly grew and Warrnambool became a thriving port.
