Wantirna is located just 24km east of Melbourne’s central business district and has a population of approximately 14,000 people. It falls under the local government area of the City of Knox with both the Knox Private Hospital and the Westfield Knox shopping centre situated within Wantirna.

History

Wantirna takes its name from a local aboriginal word meaning ‘a gurgling stream’ which refers to the Dandenong Creek. This was where settlers first arrived back in 1840 when Mrs Madeleine Scott established the ‘Bushy Park’ cattle run. Other pioneers soon arrived and by 1912 a school was built to serve the growing populace.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Westfield Knox shopping centre was opened in 1977 and now has over 350 stores. It is occasionally used as a filming location for the popular soap opera ‘Neighbours.’ As well as shopping, Wantirna is also home to Koomba Park, a huge bushland park which covers the area between the Eastlink Tollway and Dandenong Creek.
