Wangaratta is a cathedral city in the northeast of Victoria, 250km from Melbourne along the Hume Highway. It’s the most populated city in the Rural City of Wangaratta local government area. It has a population of over 18,000.

History

Wangaratta was originally inhabited by the Pangerang peoples. Many of these people were killed in the Gippsland massacres.

The first Europeans to pass through the area were Hume and Hovell. They named the Oxley Plains south of the city. In 1843, the Post Office opened. In 1848, the city was named by colonial surveyor Thomas Wedge. The name’s thought to come from an Aboriginal word meaning “nesting place of cormorants” or “meeting of waters”.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, an annual jazz and blues celebration, takes place in the city. It attracts world-famous acts and has been attended by thousands every year since it began in 1990.
