Vermont is a suburb of Melbourne, located 21km east of the central business district. It has a population of around 10,000 people and covers an area of just 4.3km².
History

Long before the first European settlers arrived, the area now known as Vermont was inhabited by the Wurundjeri indigenous Australians. At this time, the lands were covered in bushland which is believed to be why the name ‘Vermont’ which means ‘Green Hill’ was chosen.

Settlers arrived in the 1850s, including many woodcutters and charcoal burners. These people helped to clear the way for the farms and orchards which characterised the area until the 50s and 60s. A growing demand for residential properties led to the subdivision of the orchards during this time.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Vermont is the proud home of several sporting clubs including the Vermont Eagles Australian Rules football team and the Vermont Cricket Club. This quiet suburb also has a number of shops, restaurants and cafes.
