A suburb of Melbourne, Vermont South is 20 kilometres from the Melbourne City Centre. It has a population of 11,416.

History

The local people are the Wurundjeri. They spoke Woiwurrung, a language that survives to today, though it is not spoken widely. The Wurundjeri are a part of the Kulin nation. This is made up of five tribes who are located in Victoria.

The first settlers arrived in 1850. They lived in wattle and daub huts. These were replaced by more solid, timber homes later on. During the 1950s and 60s, the suburb was full of orchards. The suburb was home to the Australian Gun Club in the 60s and 70s.

Vermont South is home to a slice of modern Australian history: “Ramsay Street”, a central location in the soap opera Neighbours, can be found here. Actually called Pink Oak Court, the street has regular tours.
