Upwey is a residential suburb in Victoria. It’s located 32km east from Melbourne’s central business district and has a population of 6,760.

History

The area was originally known as “Mast Gally” as several masts for ships were cut down in the 1850’s. The Tullidge sisters bought a homestead in 1897 and named it Upwey after an English village. In 1900, a railway station was opened nearby.

In 1997, the Dandenong Ranges suffered devastating bushfires that threatened Upwey. However, the fires didn’t make it to the town.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, the main street has a variety of shops and services. Together with its neighbouring suburb, Tecoma, Upwey has an AFL team, which competes in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League.

The area has two primary schools and one high school. There are two creeks – Ferny Creek and Upwey Creek.
