History
A quintessential slice of pioneer history, Towong’s settlement dates all the way back to the 1840s. The fertile land made for good farming, and a small community soon sprang up around the river. The region soon became known for the many thoroughbreds grazing on the plains, and Towong’s first ever horse race was recorded in 1871.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Races are still a huge deal in Towong, with the Towong Cup drawing in thousands of spectators every year. It’s held at Towong Turf Club every Victorian Labour Day, and has been ever since 1871. Towong is also popular with nature lovers, set near the Thowgla Valley, Mt Mitta Mitta National Park, and countless other gorgeously scenic treats.
