Toorak is best-known for being one of the most affluent suburbs in Australia and with the highest average property values in Melbourne, it’s one of the most expensive places to live in Australia. It is located 5km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district and has a population of around 13,000 people.

History

In 1849, a merchant named James Jackson built a stunning mansion and named it Toorak House, a name which many believe came from words used in the indigenous Woiwurrung language. Eventually the area itself because known as Toorak and during the land boom of the 1880’s many more large mansions were built and its reputation for affluence was born.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main commercial area is on the central Toorak Road and is known as The Toorak Village. This is a strip which features a range of shops and cafes.

Elsewhere, the wealth that the suburb has become known for is evident in the magnificent mansions which still stand, such as Illawarra House and ‘Coonac’, the most expensive house in Melbourne.
