Thornbury is a suburb of Melbourne, 7km north of the CBD. It is bordered to the west by Merri Creek and to the east by Darebin Creek. It has a population of 17,500.

History

For 111 years, Thornbury was part of the former City of Northcote Local Government Area. This existed from 1883 until 1994.

Thornbury is a demographic and commercial satellite of Northcote, along with Westgarth. Although both Thornbury and Westgarth have distinct central hubs, Thornbury is different. The majority of Thornbury is too far away from its centre to ever develop its own separate identity.

The industry is mostly made up of scrap metal yards and warehouses.

Thornbury’s main shopping area is the shopping strip centred on Thornbury Village. It is also known for its nightlife, with many bars and night spots. It also has a large alternative music culture and a few independent music stores.
