Thomastown is located 17km north of Melbourne and is home to over 20,000 people. It is part of the local government area of the City of Whittlesea.

History

In 1848, John Honniball Thomas bought an area of 106 acres north of Melbourne to establish a market garden and Thomastown was born. In 1850, German settlers arrived nearby and a post office was established soon after in 1862.

The area had perfect conditions for farming and a dairy was established in the 1930s which became Metropolitan Dairies Pty Ltd.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Thomastown has a busy retail area with several centrally located shopping centres and strips. There is also a library and an aquatic centre which is very popular with both residents and visitors.

For leisure and recreation, there are 5 sporting ovals and a number of reserves and parks. The town is also home to an Australian Rules football team called the Thomastown Football Club.
