Tarneit is 25 kilometres west of Melbourne’s central business district. The town has a population of over 31,000. It sits next to the lively town of Truganina.

History

Tarneit gets its name from the Wathaurong people of central Victoria. The word Tarneit means the colour white. The earliest known settlement in the area is in the 1830s. Back then, Tarneit was used as agricultural grazing land. These days, a growing population is transforming the landscape.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are many schools in the suburb and the town is currently been development to keep up with residential growth. A new railway station has been built to offer a faster service than the Werribee railway line. The Wyndham bus network has been improved to better cater for commuters from Tarneit.

Leakes Road has also been redeveloped. This is to ease congestion and provide a better link from Altona North and Laverton North to Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing.
