Swan Hill is a city in the north-west of Victoria. It is located on the banks of the Murray River. Its population is 9,894.

History

The Wemba Wemba and Wati Wati people inhabited Swan Hill prior to Europeans. The Wemba Wemba people called it ‘Matakupan’, or ‘place of the platypus’. Explorer Thomas Mitchell camped in the area on 21 June 1836. He named it ‘Swan Hill’ for the high numbers of fowl there.

Isaburo Takasuka grew the first commercial rice crop in Australia in 1914. The Swan Hill post office opened on 1 February 1849. It became a city in 1965.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Swan Hill is home to two football clubs, the Swan Hill Swans and the Tyntynder Bulldogs. Futsal and soccer are also played in the town. The Swan Hill Jockey Club schedules ten race meetings a year.
