Welcome to Sunshine, VIC

Sunshine is a suburb of Melbourne, 11km-13km west of the CBD. Its local government area is the City of Brimbank and it has a population of around 9,000.

History

Prior to being named Sunshine, the township was known as Braybrook Junction.

1890 saw the opening of the Braybrook Junction Post Office. In 1904, H.V. McKay bought the Braybrook Implement Works. In 1906, he moved his agricultural machinery manufacturing business from Ballarat to Braybrook Junction. This established the Sunshine Harvester Works, becoming the largest manufacturing plant in the country.

The locality was renamed Sunshine in 1907 after locals petitioned to change the name to honour the Sunshine Harvester Works.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sunshine is home to many light and heavy industrial companies and is an important retail centre in the west of Melbourne. With many shopping strips in the suburb, Sunshine also has two shopping centres, the Sunshine Plaza and the Sunshine Marketplace.
