The suburb of Strathmore is located 11 kilometres north-west of central Melbourne. It falls within the City of Moonee Valley. It has a population of 8,111.

History

The first land sales in Strathmore occurred in 1843. Major Frederick Berkley St John bought the area in the north while Edward Jones Brewster was another major purchaser. Both became very rich through subsequent subdivisions.

Reverend John Sinclair first suggested the name Strathmore in 1936. The name was derived from the Valley of Strathmore in Scotland. The Strathmore Post Office opened in 1953.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Strathmore was largely an unknown suburb until 2005 when a Direct Factory Outlet was constructed. This boosted the local economy but also caused heavy traffic. Napier Park is a carefully preserved woodland block which gives a sense of what the area was like before European settlement. It includes a stand of River Red Gums.
