St Kilda is a popular tourist area of Victoria 6 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s central business district. It is an inner suburb of the metropolitan area of Melbourne and has a population of around 18,000.

History

The area of St Kilda was named after a ship called the Lady of St Kilda by Charles La Trobe and Lieutenant James Ross Lawrence. The ship stayed on the main beach for most of 1841. In 1839, St Kilda had its first European settler, Benjamin Baxter.

St Kilda became a trendy area for wealthy people. Its population doubled to about 19,000 between 1870 and 1890. At that time, you could find lots of stone mansions and hotels in the town.

St Kilda has excellent tram and train links into the city and surrounding areas. The suburb is a hot spot for tourists. Local attractions include The St Kilda Pier, Luna Park, St Kilda Sea Baths and St Kilda Beach.

The area has many plus points that include lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and live entertainment venues. There are also arts and craft markets, as well as film and writers festivals in this part of Australia.
