Somerville is a relaxed town on the coast of Victoria with a population of over 10,500. It is located 53 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s central business district and has lots to offer people of all ages.

History

The area of Somerville used to be situated on Lower Somerville Road. Some of the original buildings are still standing today. A railway station was built in Somerville in 1889. The town centre moved to its present site in the 1890s.

In the 1900s, the suburb became home to the Somerville Hotel. A shopping strip was opened around the same time. The Somerville war memorial was opened in 1923 and moved to the Fruitgrowers Reserve in 2015.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Somerville is a quiet town with good shopping options and playgrounds, as well as lots of parks including the Fruitgrowers Reserve and Jones Road Oval. It has a gym and aquatics centre too. When it comes to food, there are plenty of restaurants and takeaway outlets.

The town has many walking paths, sports clubs and schools. Somerville provides great access to buses and is home to the Mechanics’ Hall music venue.
