Shepparton is 181 kilometres north-northeast of Melbourne with a population of over 49,000. It is a city located in Victoria with a diverse mix of people from different cultures.

History

The suburb gets its name from the town’s first European settler, Sherbourne Sheppard. It was originally occupied by the Yorta Yorta tribe who are also known as the Kailtheban.

Shepparton became a popular crossing point for miners in the 1850s. They would use punts to cross the river as there wasn’t a bridge in the town. The Irish entrepreneur, Patrick Macguire set up a punt service and built the first ever building in the town. He later sold the building to John Hill in 1853 who then turned it into a hotel.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The city’s main shopping centre is called Maude Street Mall. Shepparton has a large number of businesses linked to manufacturing. It’s also a major area for civic services and infrastructure.

Shepparton is the host of the Moooving Art Project, which is an artistic event that celebrates the local dairy industry. On top of all of that, it’s home to a large swimming centre, two performing arts centres and the Shepparton Art Museum.
