The suburb of Selby is located 37 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. Its population is 1,660.

History

The narrow-gauge railway opened in 1900. A station was needed and the area of Selby was chosen. Local landowner and councillor George Selby is the suburb’s namesake. A landslide beyond Selby in 1953 meant the narrow-gauge railway stopped operating as a regular railway. It was opened in 1962 as the current Puffing Billy Railway.

Selby was a popular tourist destination in the early nineteenth century.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wildlife is ample in Selby. King parrots, yellow tail black cockatoos, wombats and echidnas are regularly sighted.

Selby has a monthly craft and produce market. There is also a community house which offers educational and computer services.
