Sebastopol is a suburb of the city Ballarat on the banks of the Yarrowee River. It is home to 9,400 people.

History

Sebastopol got its name from the site of a major battle in Crimea. Local prospectors blasted into the rocks to get to the gold. The explosions sounded similar to the gunfire heard at the siege of Sevastopol (1854–55).

Before the arrival of the first Europeans, the indigenous tribe of the Wathaurong lived in the area. By 1864 Sebastopol had developed into an independent and thriving town. However, 130 years later it merged with the outskirts of Ballarat and became one of the city’s southern suburbs.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today Sebastopol is home to many light-industrial businesses and affordable family housing. It has several schools and a couple of nice shopping streets. Because of its remote location, it is best to explore the area by car.
