With a population of over 2,400 people, Rutherglen is a town in north-east Victoria. This small township sits near the Murray River.

History

There is some debate over the original inhabitants of Rutherglen. This is because the area lies in the middle of several tribal boundaries. However, it is generally thought that Bangerang tribe were the main tribe, and the Wiradjuri tribe lay to the north of the Murray River.

In 1860, gold prospectors made their way to Rutherglen. The population soon exploded to almost 30,000 people. Over the next few decades, gold mining became a primary industry in Rutherglen.

These days, Rutherglen is famous for its wine production. In fact, 17 wineries are scattered throughout the region. Rutherglen’s Topaque and Muscat wines that are thought to be the best in the world.
