With a population of over 1,300 people, Rushworth is a small town in Victoria. It is 156km north of Melbourne.

History

The Nuguraiillam-wurrung people are the original inhabitants of Rushworth. In 1836, Major Thomas Mitchell came across the Goulburn River and loved the landscape. By 1845, European settlers began to move into the area.

Rushworth was established in 1853, when gold was discovered. Once this happened, the population increased quickly. At its height, Rushworth had a population of 40,000 people and 26 gold mines.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Rushworth is known as the “Gold and Ironbark” town. Tourists are welcome to wander through the streets and explore the remains of the gold rush era.

The High Street Heritage Walk is popular with visitors. They can walk down High Street and read the plaques on many of the buildings. The walk continues onto the Rushworth Museum, where over 4000 historic items are on display.
