Research is a Melbourne suburb that forms part of the Shire of Nillumbik. It’s situated 28km north-east of Melbourne’s central business district, and has a population of more than 2,600. Research borders on the suburbs of Eltham, Eltham North, Kangaroo Ground and North Warrandyte.

History

First settled in the 1850s, Research’s memorable name stems from the Victorian gold rush. The suburb’s original name was Swiper’s Gully, and it was mainly known for orchards. Swiper’s Gully was then researched further and gold was discovered, leading to the name Research Gully. This had been shortened to just Research by the beginning of the 20th century.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Research’s Main Road features a good range of shops and facilities. Eltham Little Theatre, Eltham College and Balance Gymnastics can all be found around here, as well as Candlebark Court Reserve. A licensed supermarket, fish and chips shop and health food bar are also present. Research is home to several parks, including Research Park, Research Gully Reserve, and Yarramie Reserve.
